CHNS/O Elemental Analyzer include two combustion ovens one for CHNS and the other one for O.
In the CHNS analysis the sample is first combusted, followed by flow through the catalyst and copper reduction phase with the carrier gas Helium. Then the gases are carried through the GC column, which provides the separation of the combustion gases. Finally they are detected by a thermal conductive detector (TCD).
For oxygen determination the system operates in pyrolysis mode. Samples are weighted in silver containers and introduced into the pyrolysis reactor. The reactor contains nickel coated carbon maintained at high temperature. The oxygen present in the sample, combined with carbon, forms carbon monoxide which is then chromatographically separated from other products and detected by the TCD detector.
